St. Joseph's School had its beginning with the arrival in New Jalpaiguri by three Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny on 6th January 1978. The three sisters were Sr. Josephine Lukose, Sr. Savio and Sr. Dominic. This small group od sisters pioneered Christian Education enduring great hardships in the accomplishment of their apostolic mission.

The foundation of the convent building as we see it today was blessed and opened by his lordship Dr. Rev. James Toppo in April 1983. The original school was a long tin roofed building with six class rooms which is replaced currently by a two storey building which accommodates a large number of students.

The construction of the school building was started by Sr. Josephine. every morning the sisters went out and collected children from the neighborhood in a cycle rickshaw. Gradually the number of students increased and we had to construct more classrooms on the top of the same building.

It was a hard struggle for a number of years to get the non objection certificate (N.O.C) from the state Government which was a pre requisite for the affiliation to the Indian School Certificate Examination. After meeting the then Chief Minister, Sister Leo Tharappel managed to get the N.O.C.

In1988 St. Joseph's School had its first inspection by an officer sent by the council who reported very favorably on the school, teaching and result generally. On 7th February 1989 the school was affiliated. The 1st batch consisting of 8 students appeared for the ICSE examination in 1990. From then the number of students increased year after year.

A new school building with ample space was constructed to accommodate the growing population of students. Presently the preparatory and the junior section occupy the building.

A new wing was added in the view of upgrading the ICSE into ISC. In 2008 St. Joseph extended to 11 and 12 for the 1st time in its long history. The teachers are all well qualified and enthusiastic providing on all round education to the students of the school.

St. Joseph's School stands as one of the renowned and unique institution, caring for all its students from Preparatory to Twelve.
